Radon Test

What is involved in a Radon Test? Since radon can not be seen or smelled special equipment is used to test for it. You can either hire a qualified radon tester, or you can purchase radon measurement devices from home supply stores or the internet. There are basically two types of radon testing devices, active and passive.

Passive radon testing devices do not have to have electrical power to work. They use charcoal canisters and other methods to collect samples of the air for a period of time and then are sent to a testing lab for analysis.

Active radon testing units require electrical power to work. They measure and record the amount of radon that is in the air and can produce a report of the different levels of radon during different time periods. These type of testing units are usually more expensive than the passive testing units.

The EPA recommends that your radon test device be placed in the lowest level of your home that is used regularly for living area. Do not place the unit in a crawl space, closet, or hallway. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly so you can obtain as accurate a measurement of the radon levels as possible.
